We landet in LA around 10 am on Sunday the 13th of July, took the shuttle bus straight to Alamo car rental where we had pre booked our Car. And not just any car, Ford Mustang convertible! We just had to do this trip with a cool car, after all, we might not get the chance to do it again.
Since this is a round trip, we thought that we will stay in LA the last nights rather than in the beginning, since there are probably way cooler places than LA, which is basically just super big and nothing more, to see. We had heard the San Diego was a cool place, so we headed straight south to a hostel called OBI hostel. Which probably stood for Ocean Beach hostel, since that was the beach it was located at. It turns out to be just as awesome as we thought. The hostel is one of the best hostels (according to my own preferences, which is just tons of stuff to do and tons of cool people to meet) that I’ve ever stayed at. The first thing that happened when we checked in was that we were offered shots, which is always a good sign of a liberal view from the staff on party at the hostel. I’ve stayed at a few hostels that has a 0 tolerance towards alkohol, nothing bums me out more… So good that it was nothing like that here.
The hostel had something arranged every night, free dinner, beer pong, Bonfire nights at the beach with free food and no fee to participate, that is rare. The beach was really close but it was actually not that warm in the water that you might imagine. Sweden, which had a record summer this year, was probably warmer than this. I think it has something to do with the sea currents going around, I mean just 1 h west is superhot desert, which is hard to imagine standing on the beach a which is even a bit chilly when the sun is gone.
Anyway, we met tons of cool people here. Among others, we met 2 guys from Switzerland which sold us their camping gear for a real good price. I mean, we wern’t even sure we would use it but we wanted to help them out to get rid of it and its always good to have the stuff if opportunity arises. We played alot of beer pong here, we managed to get a lot of free beer out of that since we really sucked 😉 But I mean, free beer = Win! Stupid game to win really if you want to keep your own beer.
We had 2 nights booked here at OBI, but we extended it one more night since we had such a good time.
Las Americas
We thought that we should see something more than just the quite beach town of Ocena Beach. So we headed to this place called Las Americas which is just lots of outlet stores on the border of Mexico. Good brands really cheap here! Im talking like 25 % compared to normal swedish prices on some stuff. So we bought some stuff, like caps, shorts, jackets. We didn’t really want to spend to much though, and we had limited space to pack it in to so we kept calm. We then drove through San Diego city. Was pretty crowded and Adam needed to take a dump so we didn’t have time to stop. Headed back to OBI for a night of party. Tuesday is always Taco day in California. Cheap taco everywhere. I tried some fish taco, i think they called it Maki, which was really good!
Oh, and we got stuck in a rip current as well when swimming. Was pretty scary! We just went out to jump in the waves and when we wanted to head back up we found ourselves not being able to get any closer to the beach, no matter how hard we struggled. Adam swallowed a mouth full of water which didn’t really help our situation. He got hold on to me as the next way punded over us. After that I figured we better sign the Beach guard to come pick us up, but by the time she got out we had gotten control of the situation and was able to wade up without the humiliation of having to be saved. So look out for that when swimming in the Pacific!
Sea world
We thought it would be cool to see Sea world, I know its quite controversial to some to go to sea world since some don’t think big animals like the killer whales should be kept in captivity like that. Well, maybe not, but I’ve never seen a Killer Whale before and there is plenty of shit going on in the world, I doubt that Sea World is one of the worst. They take a lot of the money they are getting to help wildlife around the world, so I think that weighs up the bad things about it.
The show was, as you might expect, a bit over exaggerated with loud music and a kinda commercial feeling behind the trainers acting. The show started with a salute to the armed forces and all soldiers of the states and their allies were asked to stand up and get applauded, something I did not experience before, since stuff like that would never ever happen in Sweden.
We saw a lot of animals at seas world, the Beluga Whales was also really cool! They also had a few roller coasters which we tried out. Long and fun day at sea world, I mean, we even go to see some Amish people 🙂
Into the Desert
After one last night of party, we said goodbye to our friends and headed east, into the desert! We took one last swim before we went though, we figured it would be long until we would see the ocean again. Our plan was to spend at least 10 days inland before heading back out to San Fransisco, way up north.
